In the heart of the apple growing county of Herefordshire the Cider Museum
explores the history of traditional cider and perry making worldwide.
A walk through the Museum reveals the story of cidermaking: from growing and harvesting
the fruit to milling, pressing, and fermenting the juice - and even distilling
the cider into brandy. The King Offa Distillery is a working exhibit, producing
Cider Brandy, Apple Aperitif and Cider Liqueur on site.
See the traditional farm cider house, the travelling cidermaker's portable
equipment, the Champagne Cider cellars, the Vat House, the Cooper's Workshop,
and the 19th century bottling machinery.
View the Pomonas - beautiful books dating from the 19th century, illustrating
different varieties of apples and pears grown specifically for cider and perry
making. There is a regular programme of events
and exhibitions, including the annual International Cider and Perry
Competition in May and the Cidermaking Festival in October, a weekend
celebrating cider and the apple, with demonstrations of traditional
cidermaking, coopering, beekeeping and many activities for all the
family. All under cover.
New galleries for 2005
include a display of 19th century watercolours illustrating different
varieties of apples and pears and an exhibition of 18th century
cider flutes.
Guided tours and ploughmans lunches may be booked in advance.
